Upcycled Keycap Activity at ALBA E-Waste Day 2025

We were glad to be part of ALBA’s International E-Waste Day 2025, an event that encouraged families and younger participants to learn more about electronic waste and how everyday items can be given a new purpose.

For the event, Artzei Studio ran a free-flow keycap customisation activity using keycaps recovered from old keyboards. The activity offered participants a simple and creative way to engage with the event’s sustainability message through hands-on making.

Giving Used Keycaps a New Purpose

Participants could join the activity at any time and begin by selecting a keycap from the available shapes and sizes. After a short introduction to the materials and activity, they settled in to customise their chosen pieces using acrylic markers.

With different colours available, participants added their own illustrations, patterns and colour combinations. The open-ended format allowed everyone to work at their own pace, making the activity accessible to both children and accompanying family members.

From Keyboard Component to Personalised Keychain

Once their designs were complete, the decorated keycaps were transformed into keychains that participants could bring home.

Each finished piece gave a component from an old keyboard a new identity and purpose. Rather than being discarded, the used keycaps became colourful, personalised keepsakes created by the participants themselves.

The activity brought together creativity and upcycling in an approachable format, supporting the event’s wider message that even small electronic components can be reimagined and enjoyed in a new way.
